Richard Day and Ray Brown put together a superb
Spring Symposium on 19 April! More than 70 attendees listened and
watched as presenters started out by squeezing rocks and ended up
by showing time-lapse seismic on real reservoirs in living color!
All of the speakers did well. It was interesting to note the need
for geophysicists to have an intimate knowledge of geology,
petrophysics and petroleum engineering, as well as geophysics, in
this world of time-lapse seismic. The question: How does one stay
abreast of all of these topics and still do their daily job. The
answer: Attend the Spring Symposium. As many of you know, I am a
big proponent of standardization. As I watched the presentations
at the Spring Symposium, I wondered if the day will come when
symbols and definitions for rock characteristics will be
standardized across disciplines.
I want to thank all of this year's GST officers
for a great job. We didn't have a 2nd Vice President in charge of
programs, so the officers scrambled and did that job as well as
their own. And we have a great list of officers for next year.
Their names were announced at the Spring Symposium, and they are
listed elsewhere in this issue of TimeLines. In addition to
elected positions, there are appointed positions. Let me know if
you would be interested in one of these appointed positions such
as Membership Chairman, Community Education Coordinator, etc. In
this regard, you could be an unofficial membership chairperson in
your own organization. If there are geophysicists around you who
are not members of GST, invite them to a meeting and sign them
up.
Don't miss the joint GST/SEG Picnic on 19 May
beginning at 10 a.m., particularly if you have kids and
grandchildren. There will be games for everyone, plenty to eat
and prizes for all.
Quit procrastinating and send in your
contribution to the SEG Geoscience Center Bricks Program and become
a piece of GST history. Remember to make your donations through
the GST so that we can accumulate contributions into $1000
increments and thus receive matching funds.
GST will present a Career Fair Day on 11 May at
Eugene Field Elementary School. Susan Henley and others from the
SEG will help us. We have some great presenters, but we can always
use more help. Please call me if you would be willing to work with
"veteran" presenters to learn more about this type of community
service. You can make a difference.
